Excello Records and the Swamp Blues

The following interviews were conducted by Year of the Blues partner Ben Manilla Productions, producer of the Public Radio International series "The Blues," which will begin broadcasting in September.

Lazy Lester was a critical member of the Crowley, Louisiana studio band that formed the "swamp blues" sound. As both leader and sideman, he played harmonica and guitar, as well as percussion with everything from leather saddles to rolled up newspapers. Lester presently resides in Michigan, and continues to play and record.

Phil Guy is the younger sibling of Buddy Guy, from whom he learned the basics of blues guitar. An accomplished artist in his own right, he was further schooled in the bars and roadhouses of the Baton Rouge area with the Raful Neal band, and has since 1969 resided and lead bands in Chicago.
